Biocontrol in Durian Orchards: From Training to a Verifiable Field SOP

A 26 August 2026 workshop by AGRITEC, BIOTEC and the Chumphon Provincial Agriculture Office emphasised using the right biocontrol agent, at the right time, in the right way. This article translates that principle into a transparent field evidence pack.

1. What the new activity establishes—and does not

AGRITEC, BIOTEC and the Chumphon Provincial Agriculture Office ran a practical workshop on 26 August 2026 covering root and collar rot, pathogen baiting linked to Trichoderma, a biocontrol fruit-fly trap, field surveillance and DAPBot.

The report confirms 70 participants and an integrated-biocontrol SOP project. It does not report yield, disease reduction, cost or long-term efficacy, so attendance must not be presented as an agronomic outcome.

2. Diagnosis comes before the product name

Similar orchard symptoms can have different causes. A wrong diagnosis can direct a biologically active product at the wrong target, which is why surveillance and assessment were taught alongside agent selection.

DAPBot supports pest identification and access to experts, producers and weather context. An online image or answer should not replace field confirmation when symptoms are severe, uncertain or threaten the wider plot.

3. An eight-field Field SOP Evidence Pack

A usable SOP captures evidence before, during and after application so teams can distinguish diagnosis, product, timing, environment and execution.

  • Plot & Plant — plot ID, cultivar, age, stage and tree location.
  • Diagnosis — symptom, date, image, method, reviewer and confidence.
  • Target — named disease or pest and the rationale for control.
  • Product Identity — trade name, producer, verifiable registration, lot and expiry.
  • Application — date, time, operator, equipment, label/SOP method and deviations.
  • Environment — relevant rain, humidity, temperature and field condition without invented thresholds.
  • Follow-up — scheduled reassessment, consistent criteria, repeat-location images and adverse observations.
  • Decision — continue, revise, stop, isolate or escalate, with approver.

4. Move beyond a pilot without overstating the result

Start in a bounded area with an appropriate comparator, use one assessment method, pre-schedule follow-up, and retain positive, unchanged and adverse outcomes rather than selecting favourable images.

An efficacy conclusion requires suitable experimental design and expert analysis. Field records support operations and traceability; they are not automatically product-validation research.

5. Registration and claim boundaries

Thailand’s Department of Agriculture publishes a registration process for biocontrol pest-control products and a registered hazardous-substance list whose page states it was updated on 16 July 2026. Users should verify the exact trade name, registration, permitted use and label.
