Drone Delivery for Durian in China: From Demonstration Flight to Scalable Last-Mile Evidence

DITP reported on 12 June 2026 that Nanning had hosted its first trial delivery of durian by drone, while the operator was still testing the route before applying for commercial-flight permission. It is evidence of a pilot—not a routine service or a measured sales result. This article sets out the evidence gates required before scale.

1. The latest report confirms a pilot—not a routine service

DITP reported on the Thai Shopping Festival 2026 & CP Durian Festival in Nanning, which promoted Thai products and fruit through online and offline channels from 23 May to 6 June 2026. The programme included the city's first trial delivery of durian by drone to attract attention and stimulate ordering.

The scope matters: the report says the operator was testing flights along the transport route and would subsequently seek permission for commercial drone transport. It should not be shortened into a claim that an authorized commercial service had launched, and expected sales impact should not be presented as a measured result.

2. Four statuses that communication must not merge

A Demonstration Flight showcases an experience. A Route Trial tests aircraft, communications, route and handoff points. Authorized Commercial Operation requires evidence of permission and readiness within a defined scope. Scaled Service must be repeatable across flights, times and abnormal events.

Passing one stage does not automatically satisfy the next. A Claim Register should record the flight, date, status, approver and review date behind every statement, preventing marketing copy from saying “now available” before the evidence supports it.

3. A six-layer Drone Delivery Evidence Pack

This is an editorial framework—not a DITP or CAAC standard and not a guarantee of permission. It organizes evidence for the product owner, drone operator, retailer and recipient before a pilot expands.

  • Permission & Airspace: operating area, flight plan, approvals, time conditions and authority contacts.
  • Aircraft & Operator: registration, operational identification, operator competence, maintenance and applicable insurance.
  • Payload & Product: load weight, crate restraint, spike protection, vibration, temperature and ripeness condition before and after flight.
  • Route & Contingency: launch and landing points, people and property risk, weather, communications, alternate landing and abort criteria.
  • Handoff & Traceability: Order ID, Lot ID, departure and arrival time, sender, recipient, opening evidence and failed-delivery process.
  • Service & Economics: actual delivery time, damage, successful flights, total cost, complaints and repeatability versus a ground alternative.

4. Durian makes last-mile design about more than speed

Fresh durian is heavy, spiked, continuously ripening and vulnerable to pressure or impact. A trial should record crate weight and balance, restraint, vibration, stem and shell condition, temperature, elapsed time and condition at opening—without inventing thresholds that have not been validated for the actual aircraft and pack.

Speed creates value only when the correct recipient receives the order on time, in the agreed condition, with a remedy when a flight is cancelled. A drone pilot therefore needs inventory control, a safe receiving point, refund or redelivery procedures and protection of order data.

5. Turn a pilot into a Go, Adjust or Stop decision

Before the trial, define a successful flight, abort events, damage assessment and which costs are included. Afterward, separate aircraft, route, weather, packaging, product and handoff issues so the correct cause is addressed. Event attention or views should not substitute for service-quality evidence.
